December 30, 2024 https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2024/12/27/virginia-teen-boy-scout-musical-instrument-repair/

Brendan Wheeler, your love for music and commitment to service as a Scout resulted in the collection and repair of over 100 musical instruments that will enrich the lives of young people who might otherwise have never known the joy you find in the trumpet. By reaching out to the community and engaging friends and family, you enabled Hungry for Music to expand its outreach to kids of limited means, as well as helping you qualify as an Eagle Scout, whose ranks have gone on to serve our country and society in general. Blessings!

Scott VanLuven, on your way home from work you witnessed an attempted kidnapping of a seven-year-old girl. Your heightened awareness of your surroundings thanks to your involvement in a community watch patrol led you to intervene, blocking the alleged perpetrator from driving away before the police arrived and arrested him. Thanks to your actions, a greater tragedy was averted.  Blessings.

Paul Billiter, you heard the screams of a stranger and did not hesitate to follow her voice. You discovered an attempted kidnapping in progress and, without regard for your own safety, intervened and allowed the girl to escape. Thanks to you, a greater tragedy was prevented. Afterward, you insisted you were not a hero. It appears to be the only thing you got wrong that day.  Blessings.

Angela Patton, as part of the efforts of the organization your founded, Girls for a Change, you initiated the Date with Dad program for incarcerated fathers and their young daughters. In doing so, you awakened the men to the centrality of their presence in their daughters’ lives, instilling in them a renewed sense of purpose as fathers. And all of this thanks to a dinner dance in prison at which the men are treated with dignity and respect, something inherently lacking in jail. At the same time, the girls receive an unforgettable gift of hope and reconnection. Blessings.

November 13, 2023

An unusual award has been given to Tania Galinanes. Ordinarily, the amount of the award is $18, but please read the article linked below the award letter and you will understand what makes this award different from all the other awards.

Congratulations!

You have been named a recipient of an award from the Sixty Fund.

The Sixty Fund acknowledges people who have performed an act of courage, compassion, generosity or wisdom.

The fund was founded on the sixtieth birthday of Jack Moline at his request.  It has modest resources that provide a testimonial and small monetary award to individuals who, regardless of their age, circumstances or personal history, do something exceptional to demonstrate one of the four values.

“Sixty” is the numerical value of the Hebrew letter “samekh” which comes from the word meaning to support (the falling).  All too often these examples of admirable behavior remain unacknowledged when, in fact, they are often the very acts that save another human being from falling into loss, misery or despair.

Recipients of an award from the Sixty Fund are encouraged to use the small gift at their own discretion, though in this case, a suggestion comes with the award.

Your award comes because you have performed an act of wisdom described in the Washington Post that has come to our attention.  Accompanying this letter is your certificate and a check for $100. Ordinarily, the award is just $18, the numerical value of the Hebrew word for “life,” chai. In this circumstance, you are awarded this extra amount in the hopes that when a student you inspired at school comes into your new bookstore and wants a title they cannot afford, you will have some money to provide it to them.

Thank you for setting an example for others.

Michael Schur, your successful career as a comedy writer, especially for “The Good Place,” led you to write a long-form call for people to follow your example of seeking to be, simply, better. In a world often plagued by moral exhaustion (a great term), How to Be Perfect systematically and humorously makes the case for all of us to be intentional about the large and small decisions we make on a daily basis. In your call never to give up, you connect head and heart and the occasional grocery cart.  This book is wise, and we all need it.  Blessings.

Jennifer Williams, your commitment to bring the joy of reading and a personal library to school-age children regardless of their ability to pay combines the finest values of education, equality, and equity.  If you have your way, a million books will find their way, free of charge, into the hands of kids who will be able to shut off their screens and dive into the pleasures and promises of the written word.  You have earned your title, “The Book Lady,” and inspired people all over the country.  Blessings.

Dusti Talavera, without hesitation, you jumped into fifteen feet of freezing water to save three children who fell through the ice and were drowning.  At risk to your own safety, you rescued those strangers from certain death and their families from unimaginable heartache.  The Talmud and the Qur’an both teach, “Whoever saves one life, saves an entire world.”  You saved at least three entire worlds.  Blessings.

Dustin Snyder, times have been difficult for workers at McDonald’s in Braford, PA.  You advocated with management on their behalf for a living wage, and when the workers were collectively ignored, you organized a walk-out and mass resignation.  Unwilling to leave your friends without resources, you helped them find other and better employment, and even made sure they could get to their new jobs.  You set an example for fairness, loyalty and doing the right thing even when it involves risk.  Blessings.

Aryan Chopra, you spent your winter break from school making cards for residents of a nursing home.  Your heart led you to create 200 individual works of art for people who could not see family or friends because of health concerns. Your heart warmed each of their hearts and brought a smile to their faces as well as to everyone who heard about you.  Blessings.

Jaron Dorsey, when the Jackson family lost all their possessions in a house fire just before Christmas, you refused to let them despair.  Gifting them your entire paycheck, you made certain they would have both resources and hope to see them through the holiday season.  It was an extraordinary act that you hope will set an example about how we care for others in our beloved community.  Blessings.

Phillip Blanks, the entire history of the sport of football exists in order to have enabled you to save a life.  When a desperate mother had no choice but to drop her three-year-old son from a burning third-floor balcony, your instincts as a wide receiver and Marine made you run to catch him and save him from critical injury or death.  The video of your courageous act is breath-taking.  You saved one life and an entire world.  Blessings.

April 12,2020

Burnell Cotlon, your Lower Ninth Ward Market has long been a mainstay of your New Orleans neighborhood, serving as a resource and gathering place for the community.  When the coronavirus wiped out jobs and incomes, you reversed your long-time practice of not running a tab for customers because you are sometimes the only barrier between them and the ravages of hunger.  Some of those folks died before they could repay you; you continue to resist desperation.  Blessings.

Note: Though most awards from The Sixty Fund are symbolically $18 ("life/chai" in Hebrew letters), this award is four times chai plus  bit to cover the debt of one of the customers who succumbed to the virus before retiring her debt.  If you are reading this, you could help him make up the rest.  Details of contact are easily found on the web.

Cierra Forney, you set an example for every parent when you insisted that your son use his own $20 to shop at a thrift store for his school clothes.  You were unwilling to allow him to consider his classmates as somehow “less than” because of the economic circumstances of their families.  Most important, you did it with love and in such a way that your message was impressed on his heart. Blessings.

Karen and Fritz Mulhauser, when the time came to downsize and decamp after 45 years in your home, you threw open the doors of your townhouse and invited everyone you could to come and take the belongings that would not accompany you.  Instead of creating a transactional yard sale, you gifted others with the evidence of your good taste and the stories that were attached.  In doing so, you transformed your relocation into a chance to share memories and good will.  Blessings!

Pastor Dave Greenlund, you came to Peace Lutheran when it was in dire straits and decided to set an example of how to go out with love.  Devoting the limited human and financial resources of the church to people in need – no questions asked – you and your congregation set the standard for true generosity of hand and heart.  The energizing and animating power of your work of the spirit is evident not only at Peace Lutheran, but among the people in Lauderdale and beyond.  As you say, “Your quality of life can be improved if the toilet works.”  Blessings.

Michelle Lussier, when you noticed that someone was retrieving discarded food from the dumpster behind the Little Ceasars you manage, you offered a public message of profound respect: you’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. You then offered, “no questions asked,” food and water during business hours to whoever needs it.  In doing so, you not only fed the body with nourishment, but also the soul with dignity.  Blessings.

JROTC students Raesean Goodney, Jordan Parker, Abderrahman Sebbai and Marquis Bell, you noticed smoke coming from an apartment building and, without a thought of yourselves, ran into it, broke down the doors of the three residences and rescued all of the people inside.  Without your bravery and cool under pressure, lives would have been lost.  Instead, Thanksgiving had new meaning for three families, and America had four new heroes.  Blessings.

Ari Mahler, in unimaginable circumstances you gave medical care and kindness to the man who (as you said) fifteen minutes earlier would have put a bullet through your head.  By caring for a person in need and refusing to use your kindness as some sort of weapon of retribution, you demonstrated selfless love, a quality in very short supply in these times.  Blessings.

St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center, the Walk of Respect you conduct for patients who have donated their organs for transplant makes the act of preserving life after life has ended a communal act of love.  By showing compassion for the donor and the surviving family, the caregiving team, the support staff and the administration – that is, for each other – you lift each other through the darkness of grief to the dawn of life renewed.  Blessings

May 25, 2018

Moriah Engdahl, you stood up for your principles with calm and respect when those around you isolated and demeaned your opinions.  The position you took – sensible gun laws – is unpopular in your community.  But the particular issue is less important than your example.  When people around you closed their ears and their minds, you showed them respect by stating your case and listening to theirs.  You are a hero.  Blessings.

February 11, 2018                        Our first mutual award!

For courage:
Austin Davis, you saw a stranger collapse on the sidewalk in front of your residence and ran to provide CPR, in which you had just been trained.  By attending to the emergency needs of George Dakin, you recused him from certain death from his sudden heart attack. Where others might have panicked or been paralyzed by fear, you saved a life and therefore saved an entire world.  Blessings.

For generosity:
George Dakin, a sudden heart attack dropped you to the ground, but a stranger rescued you by performing CPR until you could be revived almost half an hour later.  In gratitude, you have provided the wherewithal for Austin Davis, a man of modest means, to find meaningful work and personal transportation, paying forward the second chance he provided you.  Blessings.

Miryam Rabinowitz, out of your own experience and the pain it produced you embarked on the mission of telling the story of betrayal, loneliness and alienation that plagues the victims of sexual abuse.  Of particular note is your willingness to face down religious communities that too often believe the denials of the abusers over the reporting of the abused.  Through your film “Still Feeling,” created with no previous experience in film production, you have restored dignity and integrity to one victim, Yuval Goldenberg, and through her to many victims.  Blessings.

Orlando Gore, you have recognized the humanity of people so often neglected and avoided in our society.   To you, each passenger on your bus who is headed for another night in a shelter for homeless men is a “gentleman,” and each ride is an opportunity to bring dignity and hope and the perfect playlist to the riders who depend on your skill and compassion.  Blessings.

Andrew Miller, you chanced upon a random assault in a DC Metro station.  While others watched teenagers beat a man near the edge of the platform, you took action. You redirected their blows at the cost of your own safety, in the process likely saving a stranger’s life.  Your courage to act on the mandate not to stand idly by the blood of your neighbor has made you a hero.  Blessings.

Dale Hansen, first on behalf of Michael Sam and then in support of Mack Beggs you have used your bully pulpit “Unplugged” to speak the truth about human dignity in the context of sports. In a segment of society too often focused on stereotypical notions of the human experience, you have plainly and courageously challenged viewers – and the nation – to honor the person rather than projection.  Your honest example of maintaining an open heart even when facing unfamiliar circumstances makes you a wise role model and a voice of conscience.  Blessings.

Febin Bellamy, you recognized the common humanity between students and workers at Georgetown University and founded “Unsung Heroes” to introduce your fellow students to the dreams and accomplishments of the people who had been mostly invisible to them.  Thanks to your efforts, Georgetown is that much closer to being a true beloved community and its workers are recognized for their dignity and devotion.  Blessings.

Stacy Koltiska, when students at Wylandville Elementary School were humiliated for their parents’ neglect of school lunch bill by seeing their hot lunches discarded and replaced by a cold cheese sandwich, your heart was broken.  You never forgot your own difficult circumstances as a child. Rather than enforce the policy, you resigned in protest from a job that certainly provided you with necessary income and started a revolution “with a cheese sandwich.”  Blessings.

Homes of Hope (Lance Manlove, Patrick Staggs, Joel Tice and Tim Tice), you design and construct unused shipping containers into comfortable and sustainable residences for homeless people in impoverished areas of the world. In doing so, true to your name, you deliver not only homes, but also hope to those who might otherwise feel abandoned.  “Unless the Lord builds a house, the workers labor in vain.” (Ps. 127)  Your labor will never be in vain.  For your generosity of hand and spirit, blessings.

Zenobia Dobson, when the Arthur Ashe Courage Award was presented posthumously to your beloved son Zaevion, you took the stage before a national audience and issued a clarion call for life.  Unwilling to allow Zaevion’s life to be a private tragedy, you decried the circumstances that presented the opportunity for him to be a hero and insisted that no other family be bereaved as you were.  In rising beyond your grief with urgent love, you established your own brand of courage.  Blessings.

Dr. Sehr Haroon, as a senior in your Omaha high school you responded to the terrorist attack on Sept. 11th, 2001 by wondering "we are all humans, how could we be so different?" You started collecting donations in milk jugs for the Red Cross. But your outrage at suffering never abated. When the Syrian civil war displaced innocent people from their homes, you, a board-certified internal medicine attending, founded a non-profit organization now known as Self-Empowered Humanitarians for Relief Mission (S.E.H.R. Mission) to collect and distribute relief supplies and provide medical help to those in need around the world, regardless of geographic locations, religious beliefs, or cultural backgrounds. Donal Patrick Noonan, you recognized the look of boredom in the eyes of chronically homeless men and offered them the redemptive gift of music by forming the Atlanta Homeward Choir.  Your talents are manifold and might well have led you to personal enrichment, but you decided instead to offer them in the service of God through some of the most marginalized members of the human family.  This act of generosity, carried from across an ocean, caught the attention of the White House where it brings meaning to many more than just the men you have lifted up.  Blessings.

Larry Merlo, as CEO of CVS Caremark you led your company through the difficult and counterintuitive process of discontinuing cigarettes and tobacco products in all of your stores.  In examining the mission of CVS, the modern-day “corner drug store,” your put principle ahead of profit and placed the weight of this important link in the health-care world behind prevention and saving lives.  Blessings.

Officer Jordan Clark, when a local man in a motorized wheel chair found himself without battery power, you pushed him two blocks to a bus stop, helped him onto the bus, followed the bus to his stop, assisted him off the bus, pushed him two blocks home and assisted him into his house.  Your act of compassion was enhanced by your insistence that it was nothing special – but it set an extraordinary example for others and emphasized the devotion of the police to the well-being of citizens.  Blessings!

Olivet Middle School Eagles Football Team, your support and encouragement for team member Keith Orr set an example of selflessness and consideration that will last a lifetime.  It brings honor to your team, your school and your families.  The added detail that you thought it up and made it happen by yourselves makes every one of you a champion.  Blessings.

Bradley Destelhorst and Thomas Ecker, when all of Prince George’s County Maryland was facing a five-day shutdown of the water system during the hottest days of the summer due to a failing water main, you volunteered to try the impossible: to divert the water around the weak spot by repairing a frozen valve.  You spent the night standing in water, regrinding gears, loosening the shaft, repositioning the mechanism and finally turning the wheel 400 times to prevent a health crisis.  You saved lives and reminded us all of the value of skill and determination…and compassion.   Blessings.

Alan Chambers, you looked deep into your heart and came to realize that the authentic demands of your faith required you to step off a path of previous conviction and apologize for the pain it caused to others.  You did so without compromising your love of God or your commitment to the requirements of that love, and in so doing you brought others along with you.  Blessings.

Rabbi Akiva Herzfeld, you found a way to restore Rabbi Alice Goldfinger to dignity after her traumatic brain injury disabled her from full-time rabbinic duties.  The compassionate outreach you performed may seem amplified by the Orthodoxy of your rabbinate and congregation, but is, in actuality, the very definition of traditional Judaism.  Blessings.

Christopher Knafelc, you jumped off a subway station platform without hesitation to assist a man who had fallen, and you remained with him until responder assistance arrived.  You did so in spite of the potential for personal harm and not knowing who the individual was.  Yours was an act of selfless courage.  Blessings.

Chief Kevin Murphy, your apology to Congressman John Lewis for actions of your predecessors brought to the forefront the hard work of self-reflection and renewal of spirit that has typified Montgomery and Americans in the southern states.  You healed a generation that preceded you and inspired a generation yet to come.  Blessings.

Jason Whitlock, your column on the tragedy of Kassandra Perkins's murder and Jovan Belcher's subsequent suicide challenged the values of football fans, among whom you include yourself.  Your sobering call for us all to examine the game and its moral code rightly placed a spotlight on our priorities.  Blessings.

Officer Lawrence De Primo, you helped a man in need in a manner that might have been anonymous had someone not happened upon it.  The example of your compassion shines regardless of circumstances before or since.  You have reminded us that police officers are not merely enforcers, but guardians.  Blessings.
